Maddox had slept deeply enough that he was still a little groggy as Farrell drew him out where the bite of the night breeze suddenly ripped all the sleepiness off.

He blinked a few times, realizing how wound up the woman was compared to her normal phlegmatic state.

“What’s up?” he finally asked, noting that they had moved clear over to the new fence that had been installed today.

The dig was a dark spot in the distance.

“Sensors picked up movement and heat on the dig site, sir,” Farrell said. “When my folks spooked, whatever was over there did as well. Nothing showing right now and not an immediate threat, but we’re all supposed to tromp over there in the darkness later so the Professor is ready to dig at first light.”

“Any hint as to what it was?” he asked.

“Just warm blobs on the screen,” she said, pulling out a tablet and showing him.

At a distance of a kilometer, pixelated warm spots moving, just like she’d said, but this equipment was defensive in nature. Not designed to resolve something at that range, because Farrell had intended them to work as a moat protecting the camp.

Maddox nodded, then pulled out his comm and linked it to the tablet before activating it.

“Marrakesh. Magorian.”

“Bex, I’m sending you a sensor log that we captured here a little while ago,” Maddox said. “See if you can process it and resolve anything with better detail.”

“Need to alert Taggart or the Captain, sir?” she asked.

“Exercise your best judgment,” Maddox replied. “No apparent threat on the ground at this time. Actually, have the flight deck ready with Roadrunner, in case we need it on short notice, either to insert more security personnel or to evac the ground team. And let whoever is in charge know.”

“Captain’s off duty,” Bex replied. “Radio’s working late and has the Bridge, but I’m answering all calls at present.”

“Route it through her and let her decide,” Maddox said. “Might be nothing at my end. Might not be.”

“Understood, sir,” Magorian said. “Anything else?”

“Negative,” Maddox replied. “Out.”

He cut the line and nodded to Farrell.

“You stay on top of security,” he said. “I’ll wake the Professor and the Stevedore and bring them up to speed.”

“Understood,” Farrell nodded.

Maddox squared his shoulders and headed back to the tent where the officers had been sleeping.
